Kulai tax defaulters to face legal action

Mohd Hafiz says there are cases of owners not having paid their assessment tax for 20 years.

LEGAL action will be taken against all property owners in Kulai, Johor, who received notices for failing to settle their assessment tax.

Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) president Mohd Hafiz Aliman said such an action would be the last resort for the municipality to recover outstanding dues.

He added that MPKu would first reach out to the concerned residential and commercial property owners to remind them on the importance of paying their assessment tax promptly.

“We want to give them ample time to settle their assessment tax before taking the next course of action,” Mohd Hafiz told reporters after the MPKu full council meeting.

He warned them that failing to settle their dues on time, especially to those who owed the council for years, could lead to their properties being sealed.

“We have cases where owners have not paid their assessment tax for 20 years,” he added.

Mohd Hafiz said an owner had to pay the assessment tax regardless of whether the property was occupied or not.

The council, he said, conducted 369 awareness operations from January to June this year and collected about RM320,000 outstanding dues from the targeted RM400,000.

“We consider the figure as a good indication, hopefully more property owners with outstanding dues will settle theirs in the second half of 2025,” he added.

On another matter, Mohd Hafiz said the council was committed to addressing the flash floods issue in Kulai by upgrading the infrastructure.

“We are allocating RM4mil for the infrastructure as well as for cleaning and maintenance of drains including monsoon drains and retention ponds,” he said.

Mohd Hafiz said MPKu successfully addressed flooding problems at Taman Desa Idaman, Jalan Persiaran Indahpura 4, Federal Road junction, Taman Aman and Kampung Separa.

“We are now focusing on two more hotspots at Sengkang and Jaya Sepakat,” he added.
