Selangor Opposition attends Putra Heights gas explosion briefing

THREE representatives from the Selangor Opposition bloc attended the technical briefing on the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion on Monday (July 7), according to Selangor state assembly Speaker Lau Weng San.

"The representatives from the opposition bloc came, asked questions, took videos, and also snapped photos during the session.

"They also requested the presentation slides, which were later displayed on the Menteri Besar's social media page," he confirmed during a press conference this morning at the Selangor State Secretariat Building in Shah Alam.

He was responding to Datuk Seri Azmin Ali's statement that lawmakers from Selangor’s Opposition bloc had boycotted the technical briefing.

The three-hour briefing was conducted by experts from the Mineral and Geoscience Department, the Occupational Safety and Health Department, the Fire Department, the police, and the Civil Defence Force.

Lau also noted that a motion requesting a special state assembly sitting to debate the matter has no precedent in his experience attending the assembly since 2008.

"Even based on Westminster's system in the UK, a minimum of 100,000 signatures is required for a motion to be read," he added.

He mentioned that the request sent by the Opposition bloc came with 19 appeal-bearing signatures, with five of them signed by individuals not from Selangor.

The Menteri Besar is scheduled to debate the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion later this afternoon at the state assembly session.
