REPAIRS to the collapsed embankment at the Taman Seri Alam retention pond in Saujana Utama, Sungai Buloh should be completed by the third quarter of this year.

Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said it should be done before the northeast monsoon season sets in.

“The proposed measures and solutions are being carried out with the involvement of the developer’s engineering consultants and representatives of the local residents association.

“The state government takes seriously the concerns raised by residents regarding the safety of the retention pond, especially with the present rainy season,” he said in a statement.

On April 23, the embankment of the retention pond broke following heavy rainfall, resulting in floods that affected 35 homes in the residential area.

The incident occurred just a few months after a similar one in December and marked the third time it has happened in recent years.

“Following the incident, Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) together with KDEB Waste Management, conducted cleaning works in the affected area, while the developer carried out temporary repairs on the damaged pond wall, which can now accommodate normal water flow,” said Izham.

“At the same time, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) is in the process of finalising a long-term solution to ensure residents’ safety.”

Besides the long-term measures, he said several immediate actions have also been identified and initiated.

These included excavation work and repositioning of rubbish traps within the retention pond.

“These works are currently in progress,” said Izham.

“The state government, through DID, MPKS and other relevant technical agencies, is working to resolve the issue and ensure it does not recur in the future.”
