THE state government is introducing the Melaka Reading Awards this year.

Melaka Public Library (Perpustam) chairman Datuk Rosli Abdullah said the awards are aimed at increasing the number of reading materials and readers.

“The Melaka Reading Awards is also in support of the National Reading Decade campaign, which runs until 2030.

“The state government will also recognise the Melaka Reader Icon,” he said during the launch of the Melaka Reading Awards held in conjunction with the state-level Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minit programme by deputy state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem at Bukit Baru.

Rosli said the Melaka Reader Icon would have categories for children, youth, adults, civil servants and persons with disabilities (OKU).

He said the award would also recognise the best readers among individuals who made reading a lifestyle.

“Among other categories for the awards will be the best library.

The awards will run until July 31 and the winner of each category would take home RM3,000 cash, while the runner-up and third place will win RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.

They will also receive a certificate and trophy each.
