Council adds recycling hub to facility at Kg Perwira Jaya, Ampang
THE underutilised Dewan MPAJ Perwira Jaya in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, will remain a multi-purpose hall following concerns raised by local residents.
However, the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) said the premises in Jalan Hilir 1, Kampung Perwira Jaya would also serve as a collection point for recyclable materials.
MPAJ said this has been conveyed to the residents’ association representatives and the local community.
“During the meeting, MPAJ explained that the hall’s original function as a venue for community activities would not be altered.
“The hall will remain available for rental by any party.
“Most recently, the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual was carried out at the hall with logistical support from MPAJ, subject to the established terms and conditions governing the use of the facility,” it said in a statement to StarMetro.
MPAJ said it has explained to residents that the site would be used as collection point for cardboard, paper, plastic, bottles, metal, aluminium, used cooking oil and electronic waste contributed by the community.
The council will collect the recyclable items regularly according to a scheduled collection plan to prevent nuisance issues affecting nearby residents.
In April, it was reported that MPAJ intended to repurpose the hall as a collection point for recyclable materials, citing low usage of the facility.
The council added that the project was expected to be completed by June 30, with an estimated cost of RM327,000.
According to MPAJ, the hall had recorded low utilisation, with no bookings or activities since February 2023.
“As such, the initiative to give the hall a new function is aimed at optimising the use of existing public assets while ensuring it continues to benefit the local community,” MPAJ said.
Kampung Perwira Jaya residents then urged MPAJ to consider an alternative location for the recycling centre, instead of converting their community hall as a collection point for recyclables.
They said repurposing the hall would deprive residents of a public facility.
Former Chempaka assemblyman Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad said a proposal had been submitted to MPAJ identifying Pandan Indah Commercial Park as a more suitable location for the recycling centre.
“The proposal was submitted more than 10 days ago.
“Residents objected to the original proposal because the hall is an important community facility that can be used for various social activities, including wedding receptions, welfare programmes, neighbourhood events and other community functions.
“Converting the hall into a recycling centre will deprive residents of a much-needed public amenity,” he said in a statement.
Iskandar, who is also chief coordinator of the Centre for Community Advancement and Housing (Reach) said residents were concerned that having a recycling centre near their homes could affect public health, safety and their quality of life.
“We urge MPAJ to provide an immediate response to the alternative site proposal.”
MPAJ said it has taken note of the proposal to relocate the recycling centre to Pandan Indah.
The council said the plan to set up a recyclables collection point at Dewan MPAJ Kampung Perwira Jaya was approved in July 2025.
