A TOTAL of RM1.1mil in zakat funds is being disbursed this Ramadan to the needy in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, benefitting some 5,500 recipients.

The allocation is made under the “Nur Ramadan” programme by Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP).

The recipients which include orphans, senior citizens, single mothers, Muslim converts and people with disabilities, were identified using data from the Welfare Department and MAIWP’s registry.

Some 300 recipients received the aid in person during a breaking of fast event at Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) headquarters.

Guest-of-honour Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa thanked MAIWP, saying the effort was in line with the Federal Government’s aim in reducing poverty.

“Zakat is a manifestation of the social justice concept and we all have an obligation to help the less fortunate,” she said.

“Efforts in helping the needy must not be limited to Ramadan; it should be continued during other months,” she added.

The Federal Territories Department (JWP) said in a media statement that a total of 700 recipients in Putrajaya would receive aid under the programme, with the remaining aid given out in phases.

“Out of the RM1.1mil funds, RM140,000 is meant for recipients in Putrajaya,” it said.

JWP said it had disbursed RM75,000 to mosques and surau in the federal territories to prepare for breaking of fast and pre-dawn meals, and RM5,000 to Surau Abdul Rahman Auf in Precinct 11 of Putrajaya to undertake upgrades and repairs of facilities.

Also present at the event were JWP director-general Datuk Seri Noridah Abdul Rahim, PPj president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Socioeconomic Development) executive director Ismadi Sakirin.
