UPGRADING works on an embankment of a tributary of Sungai Desa Aman at Kampung Desa Aman in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, is being carried out to protect against erosion and mitigate floods.
Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling, who visited the site, said upgrading works were progressing according to the project timeline.
“Concrete walls have been built on both sides that were formerly covered with earth and wild vegetation.
“It is crucial that the upgrade be carried out for the safety and well-being of villagers whose houses dot the riverbank,” she said.
According to Gombak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) there are an estimated 100 houses on both sides of the river.
Pua said the current upgrade will cost RM500,000.
Phase I, which involved 200m along the same river, was completed in 2023 at the same cost.
Both upgrading projects are under the purview of Gombak DID, while the allocation to upgrade the river was from the Housing and Local Government Ministry, said Pua.
Last week, Gombak DID assistant engineers Nurul Hezrina Yunus and Mohd Hanif Mohd Rubai joined Kampung Desa Aman, Mukim Batu, village chairman Eric Ng Kok Leong and Pua with several villagers to check the project’s progress.
“Villagers along this stretch have experienced two major erosions.
“Now they won’t need to worry about erosion or floods, with the completion of the concrete walls,” Pua said.
Ng said the project, which was supposed to be completed by Jan 28, had been delayed by two weeks.
When completed, he said the new embankment height would be able to control any river overflow during continuous heavy rain.
“Villagers along the tributary experienced floods last year, when water overflowed into the back portion of the houses,” he added.
When asked if the upper part of the river would also be upgraded, Pua said it would require more funds.
