Dedicated lane for micromobility vehicles in Sepang ready by May

Micromobility lane in Cyberjaya is currently undergoing a test run.

SEPANG Municipal Council (MPSepang) has spent RM1.3mil to build a 12.78km dedicated micromobility vehicle lane in Cyberjaya.

The lane will be built along Persiaran Semarak Api, Persiaran Bestari, Persiaran Multimedia, Persiaran Ceria and Lingkaran Cyberpoint Barat/Timur in Cyberjaya.

Council deputy president Muhamad Shah Osmin said the project, which was completed at the end of last year, had been undergoing testing by the Transport Ministry and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research.

“These are special lanes on the road for the use of micromobility vehicles.

“It is expected to be launched by May,” he said referring to e-bikes, e-scooters and bicycles, among others.

While the local council has provided the infrastructure, Muhamad Shah said the usage of micromobility vehicles was subject to the Road Transport Act 1987 and Road Traffic (Prohibition of Use of Certain Micromobility Vehicles) Rules 2021 that came into force on Dec 17, 2021.

“According to the law, micromobility vehicles that are not allowed on the road are mopeds, personal mobility devices and personal mobility aids.”

The project, he said, was in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan to increase low-carbon and environmentally-friendly mobility.

“Micromobility vehicles are gaining popularity, not only for recreational activities but also as an alternative mode of transportation.

“The design of micromobility vehicles are small, light, foldable, portable and convenient to carry along,” he said.

Muhamad Shah hoped that the use of micromobility vehicles in the first-and last-mile commute would encourage more road users to opt for public transport instead of using their own vehicles.

“This will help reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions from private vehicles.”

On a separate matter, Muhamad Shah said six residential areas in the municipality had been identified for targeted and conditional exemption of assessment tax for kampung house category this year.

They are Kampung Baharu Sungai Pelek, Kampung Baharu Sepang, Kampung Baharu Salak, Kampung Baharu Dengkil, Desa Rumah Langat and Kampung Seri Aman Mas Puchong.

“Among the conditions is that the property must be less than 2,000 sq ft, and the applicant must be a Malaysian residing in Selangor with household income of less than RM5,000.

“The application period ends May 31,” he said.
