MBJB aims to neuter 1,000 stray dogs in 2025, says JB mayor

THE Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) is targeting to neuter 1,000 stray dogs in 2025, says Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman.

The Johor Baru mayor said the second round of the spay and neuter programme will take place on Jan 7 and 8 next year where 310 stray dogs are expected to be neutered.

He said some 219 dogs have been successfully neutered in the first round of the programme which took place on Oct 29 and 30 this year.

“We are looking to hold the spay and neuter programme every quarterly next year,’’ Mohd Noorazam told reporters after the MBJB full council meeting on Monday (Dec 30).

He said some 2,692 stray dogs were caught from January to November this year from the 616 complaints received from the public in the corresponding period.

Mohd Noorazam said that most of the canines were either abandoned by their owners or left by construction workers at construction sites upon the completion of development projects.

“Go around to new construction sites, you can see many dogs at the sites to safeguard the places,’’ he said.

Mohd Noorazam said upgrading works on the council’s animal pound on Jalan Tahana have already started and the RM6mil upgrading work is expected to be completed next September.

He said the expansion of the place would allow MBJB to house more stray dogs as well as other stray animals including cows, goats and chickens.

Noorazam said MBJB is collaborating with the Social Hero Foundation and Vet Partners for the Jan 7 and 8 neutering programme.

The council received contributions worth RM142,000 in the form of dog food, rabies vaccines and flea medicine from Royal Canin Malaysia, Elanco, RhoneMa Malaysia, VetPartners Malaysia and MSD Animal Healthcare.
