JOHOR BARU: The local authorities are racing against time to capture the five stray dogs that attacked a two-year-old girl in Peserai, Batu Pahat, says Johor executive councillor Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.
The state Islamic affairs committee chairman said it was vital that the strays are captured quickly to test for rabies.
“Based on advice from the victim’s doctor, the dog should be captured and tested for rabies in order to put the victim in the clear.
“Otherwise, the girl’s family will be living in fear over the next one to two years, worrying whether or not she has rabies,” he said after visiting the victim at Hospital Sultanah Aminah on Tuesday (Sept 8).
He said dog capturing operations by the Batu Pahat Municipal Council have started on Monday following the incident which took place in Kampung Tambak at around 7am last Saturday (Sept 5).
Mohd Fared, who is also Semerah assemblyman, said the state government would also assist the family by bearing the victim’s medical costs as she needs to undergo a series of treatment.
The girl, Nur Haira Wafiqah Mohammad Hamizi, is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit after she was attacked by five dogs in front of her grandmother’s house.
The youngest child of three siblings was found lying on the ground with bloodied face and head wounds.
