Fears over Sibu hospital’s cashless plan

PAYMENT at all Hospital Sibu counters will soon be cashless.

Under this new initiative, payment will only be accepted via debit or credit cards.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sibujaya said in a statement that elderly individuals and rural communities might struggle to adapt.

“While the shift to a cashless system aligns with modernisation efforts and aims to enhance convenience, concerns have been raised regarding the potential exclusion of vulnerable groups.

“Many rural residents face limited access to banking facilities and Internet connectivity, making it difficult for them to use debit or credit cards.

“Similarly, senior citizens who are less familiar with digital technology risk being marginalised if the transition is not handled inclusively,” it said.

Likewise, adoption of cashless payments could pose challenges especially during emergencies when patients or their families may rely on cash.

The branch is proposing several recommendations such as a grace period.

“The hospital is urged to maintain temporary cash payment counters for at least six months post-implementation.

“This grace period will provide the public with ample time to adapt to the cashless system without disrupting medical services,” it said adding that further exceptions should be made for senior citizens.

“The move toward a cashless system should prioritise inclusivity, ensuring that no segment of society is left behind.

“With a phased implementation and community focused planning, technological advancements can enhance access to healthcare without creating new barriers,” it said.

Hospital Sibu director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu said the hospital would accept cash up until the full implementation of the cashless payment system.
