23 injured in tour bus crash at roundabout near Kanowit

SIBU: Twenty-three of the 43 passengers aboard a tour bus were injured after the vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the Kanowit/Durin Roundabout on the Pan Borneo Highway early Monday (Aug 31) morning.

A spokesman for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the department received an emergency call at 2.25am. Firefighters from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the accident scene 22km away.

"A total of 43 people were on board the bus, with 23 sustaining injuries, comprising 19 women and four men. The accident did not involve any trapped victims," he said in a statement Monday.

He added that upon arrival, firefighters helped remove a female passenger still inside the bus to safety. The other 42 passengers had been helped out by members of the public before firefighters arrived.

The spokesman said all injured victims received initial medical treatment at the scene before being sent to Sibu Hospital and Kanowit Hospital for further care.

The rescue operation involved six firefighters and ended around 4.50am after the scene was declared safe.

The accident took place at the same roundabout where Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan was killed in an accident on March 30, 2025. - Bernama
