KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will desilt part of Sungai Toba in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur, next month as part of its flood mitigation plan in the area.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh said 400m of the river near Masjid Al-Ubudiyah was scheduled to be desilted thrice a year.

“The third desilting work for the year was done between Oct 16 and Nov 4.

“However, due to the rainy weather, DBKL has decided to desilt it once more in December,” she said.

Yeoh, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said DBKL had also increased the height of the retention wall by about one metre along that section of the river in the middle of this year.

“This is to increase the water holding capacity along the stretch that is more prone to overflowing when there is heavy rain.

“Flap gates were also installed to prevent drainage water from flowing into the river when water levels rise,” she said.

She added that DBKL was also closely monitoring developments in the vicinity to ensure that sand and mud did not enter the drains or roads.

The Federal Territories Residents Representative Council Sub Zone 4 chairman Budihardi Sabei said that out of more than 400 houses in the vicinity, over 100 were at risk of flooding during a downpour.

“From the 100 houses at risk, at least 10 are at high risk.

“I am grateful for DBKL’s effort and hope the developers in the vicinity will ensure that the drains are properly maintained at all times,” he said.
