Shining star at awards night

The Sunway Malls team celebrates sweeping half-a-dozen accolades at the annual PPK Malaysia Awards.

SUNWAY Malls emerged the biggest winner at the seventh edition of the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association (PPK Malaysia) Awards with six accolades – the most wins for a mall group in PPK Malaysia history.

The annual awards night was held at Sunway Resort Hotel in conjunction with their 40th anniversary celebrations.

It was celebrated by various key retailers and Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia) chairman Datuk Dr Yasmin Mahmood opened the ceremony with a keynote speech on the role played by Malaysia’s mall industry in the tourism sector.

Tourism Malaysia’s aim is to enhance the country’s position as a shopping hub, and promoting Malaysia as one of the world’s best shopping destinations, she said.

“With the rapid growth of malls in Malaysia over the last 50 years, the industry has earned recognition globally for its festive ambience and innovative campaigns, inspired by the country’s multi-ethnicity.”

To encourage and elevate the industry’s professionalism, PPK Malaysia recognises mall operators for their marketing campaigns at its annual awards night, since 2016.

Following the success of the Best Experiential Marketing category, which recognises creative marketing campaigns, PPK Malaysia introduced the Top Sustainability Practices category to acknowledge significant contributions to environment, social and governance, and the sustainability agenda.

Overall, PPK received 78 entries for this year’s awards. Collectively, Sunway Malls won six and dominated the sustainability category with four wins.

“Sunway Malls’ record-breaking achievement is testimony of our commitment to innovation, creativity and sustainability,” said Sunway Malls chief executive officer HC Chan.

“As malls become increasingly public spaces, it is important we continue to connect at emotive and experiential levels,” he said.

For marketing and sustainability, Sunway Velocity Mall won two Platinum awards and Sunway Carnival Mall won two gold awards.

Also, Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Big Box Retail Park won a silver award each in the sustainability category.

Sunway Velocity won two Platinum awards with “My Christmas Story – One Fabric at a Time” and “A Journey Towards Net Zero Emission” for Best Experiential Marketing and Top Sustainability Practices respectively.

Last year, Sunway Velocity Mall registered its name in the Malaysia Book of Records with the tallest fabric waste tree – a 12m Christmas tree made from 1.7 tonnes of upcycled fabric waste.

The mall showcased their leadership in creative marketing and sustainability by dedicating every effort to their journey towards net-zero carbon emissions and upholding Malaysia’s Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Under the same categories, Sunway Carnival Mall won two Gold awards with “Fostering A Love for Reading with Le Petit Prince” for Best Experiential Marketing and “Empowering Communities for Sustainable Growth” for Top Sustainability Practices.

Sunway Carnival Mall is committed to making positive contributions to society by fostering a culture in support of SDG #4 Quality Education, through creative campaigns such as “Le Petit Prince” to encourage lifelong learning and a passion for literacy, said a press statement from the mall.

The mall’s comprehensive sustainability practices are demonstrated through energy-efficient systems, inclusive of community development, and ethical business practices to reduce carbon footprints while upholding ethical governance.

Similarly, Sunway Big Box won Silver with “Driving Energy Efficiency Through Solar and EV Infrastructure” in Johor and Sunway Pyramid won Silver with “SCAN (Sustainability Collaboration Alliance Network) & REX (Retail Extended Learning)”.

The Sunway Big Box management said it advocated a wide range of sustainable practices that extended investments towards energy efficiency such as electric vehicle superchargers, electric bikes and solar panels.

Sunway Pyramid’s win, said the mall’s management, embraces Sunway Mall’s partnership with the United Nation Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development at Sunway University, Malaysia Retail Association and Malaysia Retail Chain Association, enabling inclusive education on sustainable business practices for all retailers in the industry.

The group has three projects in the pipeline, including Sunway Ipoh Mall, which is slated to be Perak’s largest mall upon completion in 2027.

PPK Malaysia was formed in 1984 as a representative for local shopping complexes.

The association plays a key role in contributing to the nation’s growth in the mall industry by uniting industry players and collaborating with several ministries and government agencies.
