Kepong residents unable to access public cleaning services for 15 years

RESIDENTS of Fadason Villa in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur may finally be able to access public cleaning services they have been missing out on for 15 years.

They were told that the situation would be looked into after a meeting with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Health and Environment Department officers.

Community activist Yee Poh Ping, who raised the matter with DBKL, said although household waste was being collected in the area, the service did not include drain cleaning or grass cutting.

“It is possible that residents were not aware that maintenance was also supposed to be carried out by DBKL con- tractors,” Yee said.

He added that questions arose on whether Fadason Villa was entitled to such services as many believed it was a gated and guarded neighbourhood.

However, as they were not strata properties, Yee said residents were in fact entitled to DBKL’s cleaning services.

A source said that once residents put in a request for such services, DBKL would investigate the matter first.

Following this, it could take up to six months before the budget was allocated and cleaning starts.

Fadason Park Terrace House Residents Association chairman RS Ratnaselvam said although the 299-unit residential area had a guard post and was fenced up, it was not developed as a gated and guarded scheme.

“We believe that there was some technical issue with the handover from the developer to the authorities.”

He noted that while the RA had been doing its best to clean the drains, there was only so much that could be done without proper equipment.

Ratnaselvam added that the association has been paying RM3,000 a month for the past 15 years to maintain the neighbourhood.
