THE Perak Sikh Union will build a ballroom and sporting facilities near its club house in the Bandar Seri Botani township in Ipoh.
Union president Datuk Gurjeet Singh Rhande said the Ipoh City Council had already approved for the project to be built on 2.4ha of land next to the club house.
“The plan for the project is being finalised and we hope to start construction in two months’ time,” he said.
“The sports facilities include a gym and a tennis court,” he disclosed, saying that these would complement the club house’s existing two football fields.
“We hope the project can be completed within two years,” he added.
Gurjeet hopes the new facilities will encourage more youngsters to take up sports and participate in events like the 72nd Gurdwara Cup and Sikh Festival of Sports.

The events were held in Kuala Lumpur between June 28 and July 1.
During the sporting festival, Gurjeet said the Perak contingent had won medals in the events they took part in.
“We were the champions in the seniors football category for the fourth consecutive year.
“Our junior football and senior hockey teams were second runners-up while our golf team was the first runner-up,” he said, adding that the contingent is trying to form their badminton and junior hockey teams.
Gurjeet also said the union would open up clubhouse membership for people from non-Sikh communities.
“When the facilities are completed, it will be open to our members.
“We are currently finalising details to open up membership for people from other communities,” he said, adding that there were about 400 clubhouse members.
“The non-Sikh members will, however, have no voting rights,” said Gurjeet.
