Welfare of jumbos in Osaka under constant watch, says Perak exco member


IPOH: The welfare of the three elephants sent to Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, is a priority for Perak, says exco member Sandrea Ng.

The state housing and local government committee chairman said all relevant parties have been told to monitor the elephants' condition and ensure they receive all possible care.

"The concern from the public is appreciated.

"It is important that we look at the matter thoroughly, based on facts and current developments," she said on Facebook on Tuesday (May 5).

"A few things were given focus related to the welfare of the three elephants, Dara, Amoi and Kelat (collectively known as DAK).

"It is also important to ensure good diplomatic relations and (respect) the commitment and agreement that was signed," she added.

Ng was writing after a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the matter in Putrajaya on Tuesday.

The public has expressed concerns about the welfare and living conditions of the elephants, which were sent to Japan from Zoo Taiping and Night Safari.

There have been concerns about the animals being in distress, while Kelat's tusk has been damaged, along with calls and petitions to bring the elephants home.
