Elevating medical training with experiential learning opportunities

AS global healthcare systems continue to evolve, medical schools are increasingly adapting to ensure graduates remain resilient, versatile and internationally competitive.

Amid these shifts, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) continues to reaffirm its mission of delivering internationally benchmarked medical education that prepares graduates to contribute meaningfully to healthcare systems locally and globally.

Founded with the vision of broadening access to high-quality medical education, NUMed has consistently focused on producing doctors who are not only academically strong, but also clinically competent, adaptable and community-oriented.

Dr Saad Muhmood Hussain Arraki, NUMed Assoc Prof (clinical), said that the university believes strong clinical foundations and practical learning experiences are essential in preparing students for today’s healthcare environment.

Beyond traditional classroom and clinical teaching, the university places strong emphasis on experiential learning and community engagement as part of its broader medical education approach.

Throughout the academic year, a wide range of events is held regularly. These include clinical workshops, professional talks, student-led outreach activities and other collaborative healthcare programmes.

Aimed at complementing students’ formal academic training, these initiatives are designed to expose students to real-world healthcare settings and practical experiences early in their medical journey, while also encouraging greater interaction with healthcare professionals, community partners and multidisciplinary teams.

By participating in such activities, students also have the opportunity to strengthen communication skills, teamwork, leadership and patient engagement beyond conventional learning environments.

“Medicine is not learned solely within lecture halls or hospital wards. Direct engagement with communities helps students appreciate the broader social dimensions of healthcare and reinforces the importance of empathy and preventive care,” he added.

Further strengthening its commitment to hands-on clinical education, NUMed recently hosted its annual Surgical Symposium. Titled “Inspiring Future Surgeons,” the event aimed at bridging academic knowledge with practical procedural exposure.

The symposium featured insightful keynote and plenary sessions delivered by experienced clinicians and healthcare professionals, covering contemporary issues in surgical practice.

Besides that, participants took part in a series of interactive hands-on workshops designed to build technical familiarity and procedural confidence. Workshop topics included eFAST Scan, thoracostomy, laparoscopy, breast biopsy, suprapubic catheterisation, as well as incision and drainage procedures.

Attendees were also eligible to earn eight Malaysian Medical Association Continuing Professional Development (MMA CPD) points, further highlighting the symposium’s contribution to continuing professional development within the healthcare sector.

“Today’s doctors must be lifelong learners who can adapt to changing healthcare needs and systems. By combining academic rigour with practical exposure and community engagement, we aim to cultivate graduates who are capable of contributing wherever their careers take them,” he elaborated.

As the global healthcare landscape continues to shift, medical schools are expected to place greater emphasis on producing doctors capable of thriving across different healthcare systems and patient populations. NUMed’s long-term commitment remains centred on educational quality, practical competency and service-driven healthcare training.
