Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta kicks off today

TEAMWORK, discipline and respect will be on display as some 320 participants of the 33rd Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) race along the Straits of Malacca.

A total of 32 boats will set sail from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) in Port Klang on Saturday (Nov 18) as they strive to master the waters through the coastal area of Selangor before making stopovers at Puteri Bayu Beach Resort in Pulau Pangkor, Perak, the Straits Quay Marina and Khoo Kongsi Temple on Penang Island and finally at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in Langkawi.

The highlight event in the region’s maritime calendar will see participants from Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Philippines, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, France, Mexico, Italy as well as the Royal Malaysia Navy and the Royal Malaysia Police.

The RMSIR is known for its unique format, combining offshore and inshore racing; this year’s nine-day event will test sailors and their skills in diverse conditions.

Held since 1989, the regatta offers a platform for both professional and amateur sailors in six different classes, ranging from International Rating Certificate racers to classic cruisers.

Speaking at the launch of the regatta at the RSYC, RMSIR organising committee chairman Irsyad Ismail said the regatta was more than just a sailing competition.

“It is a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure, self motivation and the pursuit of excellence. It also serves as a tribute to the rich maritime heritage of the region.”

Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Ng Suee Lim said this year’s regatta had been enriched with familiarization trips for participants to showcase the best of Selangor, both as a top-notch sporting destination and a cultural hub.
