LOOKING glamorous in evening gowns and traditional costumes, 26 grandmothers sashayed down the catwalk for a good cause.
The “Amazing Amah’s Fashion Show” was organised by Rose Charities Malaysia to assist the Orang Asli community in Gerik, Perak.
The models, aged 60 and above, received a total makeover for the event.
One of the models, Datuk Molly Mark, 89, said: “I love to take part in charity events to benefit the needy.”
Rose Charities Malaysia president Datuk Lawrence Cheah said the organisation aimed to raise RM50,000 to buy solar panels and water filters for the Orang Asli community.
“We have received generous contributions in kind worth over RM50,000 as well as RM45,000 cash,” Cheah told Buletin Mutiara during the event in Penang.
Organising chairman Baby Goh thanked the senior citizens and organising committee members for making the event a success.
Goh also expressed gratitude to strategic partners Dream Makers, Montage Wedding Studio, Rain Ragazzo Academy, Stella-In International and Venessa Diamonds.
In his speech, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said an enabling environment was crucial for senior citizens to live with dignity.
“According to statistics, senior citizens will comprise 16% of the total Malaysian population by 2030.
“By the next decade, the number of Penangites over 60 years old will nearly double.”
Chow said the Penang government had started several key initiatives to provide daycare facilities as well as opportunities for social engagement and lifelong learning for senior citizens.
“We collaborate with stakeholders to adopt International Standards in Professional Aged-Care Services,” he added.
About 400 people attended the “Amazing Amah’s Fashion Show” which was also held to mark Mothers Day.
Besides the fashion show, guests were also entertained by Nyonya and line dances by senior citizens, and musical performances.
A Mothers Day cake-cutting ceremony was also held.
Chow and his wife Tan Lean Kee were the guests of honour. Also present were Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee, Tourism, Art and Culture Ministry Penang director Jonathan Freddy P. Bagang and Rose Charities Malaysia trustee Tan Sri Dr Mohd Yussof Latiff.
