More to take part in state DOE’s e-waste campaign

Perak Environment Department aims to collect 100 tonnes of electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) this year.

Department director Rosli Zul said two competitions would be held to achieve the target.

“It is one-eighth of the overall national total of 800 tonnes.

“We will hold two competitions; one is between all local governments and the other is between interested industries,” he said, elaborating that the two events were part of the department’s annual e-waste collection campaign and held in conjunction with National Environment Day in October.

“There will be 15 participating local councils and 22 private companies.”

“Eight companies took part in the campaign voluntarily last year.

“This year, due to an increase in interested participants, we will hold the competition in recognition of their efforts and to make things interesting.

“The campaign is from Sept 10 to Oct 21,” said Rosli.

He said the department managed to collect 44 tonnes of e-waste last year.

“It was more than what we had targeted, which was 20 tonnes,” he added.

The campaign is held to create greater public awareness of responsible disposal of e-waste.

“We want to create a culture where people manage their e-waste sustainably and in an environmentally-friendly way,” Rosli said, highlighting that the campaign had been conducted since 2019.

He said the department would be working with three licensed contractors this year to ensure a smooth collection process.

The three contractors are DNK Metal Recovery (M) Sdn Bhd, Edsha Solution Sdn Bhd and Sun Soon Yik Sdn Bhd.

“Edsha Solution will be responsible for Ipoh, Kerian, Tapah, Lenggong and Tanjung Malim.

“DNK Metal Recovery will collect e-waste in Teluk Intan, Taiping, Manjung, Batu Gajah and Gerik, while Sun Soon Yik will handle Kuala Kangsar, Selama, Pengkalan Hulu, Kampar and Perak Tengah,” he said.

Members of the public who have e-waste to discard can contact their respective local councils or the contractors.

There will be RM25,000 worth of lucky draw prizes to be won.

“The value of the prizes have grown significantly, compared to only RM5,000 last year,” said Rosli.

“People who hand their e-waste to the contractors will be remunerated with cash tokens.

“Announcement and prize presentation for winners will be held at the launch of the National Environment Day celebration in Selama on Oct 23,” he added.
