Malaysia marks World Bamboo Day virtually

A past year's bamboo planting programme by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations.

THE 10th World Bamboo Day will be celebrated virtually in Malaysia in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Globally, it is marked on Sept 18.

Various activities have been lined up throughout this month.

Two programmes – a colouring contest being organised specially for primary school pupils (Year 1 and Year 2), and a 5km virtual run — are being held until Sept 30.

In conjunction with Malaysia Day on Sept 16, the planting of 100 bamboo plants will take place simultaneously nationwide.

The virtual launch of World Bamboo Day Malaysia (WBDM) 2021 will be held on Sept 20, together with the unveiling of the National Bamboo Industry Development Action Plan 2021-2030 and Malaysia Bamboo Industry Sustainability Forum 2021.

Two webinar series on Sept 28 and 29 — on the use of bamboo in the construction industry and bamboo plantations — will be held at the closing of the WBDM 2021 celebrations.

Each of the World Bamboo Day activities planned for this year is aimed at bringing awareness to the public on the bamboo’s potential to boost the country’s economic growth and as an eco-friendly material.
