Workers seen maintaining social distancing before entering mall

WORKERS were spotted queuing to enter the Kenanga Wholesale City Fashion Mall in Jalan Kenanga, Kuala Lumpur before the mall opened at 10am Tuesday (May 5).

It was better managed on Tuesday after the management adopted a different tracking approach.

Photos and videos of people making a beeline to enter the mall went viral Monday (May 4) for not maintaining the recommended one-metre social distancing.

Its marketing communications executive Nur Shahirah Shamsuddin said although the management anticipated a big number of retail staff to report to work, it miscalculated the time needed for them to fill in their particulars for contact tracing before entry.

"A total of 1,675 people turned up on Monday morning, the first day of conditional movement control order (MCO). Most were retail workers.

"After the incident, we advised all workers to turn up early and arranged more security officers to man the front and back entrances.

"All workers were allowed in immediately after sanitising their hands and had their body temperature checked.

"Our security officers will then go to each shop to gather the workers' particulars," she said.

Nur Shahirah said the situation on Monday was unprecedented.

"We had drawn lines on the floor to guide people queuing to maintain the one-metre social distancing, but the large number of people coming in during a short period caused the incident.

"We have about 800 shops and at least half have resumed business. Each shop has up to five retail workers," she said.
