NEW Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Yew Tung Seang has promised to adopt an efficient delivery system that can serve the people more effectively.
“The MBPP will hold to the principle based on a ‘street view’ rather than ‘helicopter view’.
“It means that we want to be on the ground to understand the problems face by the rakyat and not from a distance.
“As a mayor with an architect background, I believe action speaks louder than words,” he said yesterday.
The council, said Yew, would focus on the Smart City Blueprint by focusing on five main domains, which are smart e-governance, smart mobility, smart environment, smart economy and smart social.
“All the systems presently would be integrated under one major system with the usage of information and communication technology and Internet of all Things,” he said in his speech after being sworn in at City Hall near the Espalande.
Yew added the initiative was in line with the industry era of 4.0 which harnesses on machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Yew replaces Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif who has taken up the post of executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHabitat) in Kenya.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, in his address, said MBPP’s infrastructure expenses which has hit RM500mil since 2008 for upgrading of roads, drainage, markets, hawkers stalls and toilets would continue.
“These are short-term measures and the ultimate plan is the have the light rail transport which the state is still awaiting approval from the Federal Government.”
Also present at the swearing-in ceremony were Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy, Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, MBPP secretary Addnan Mohd Razali, State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus, state exco members, city councillors and assemblymen.
