Preppy gets playful: Smart, scholarly style scores straight As on runways

Polished but relaxed, with a playful edge, the preppy chic aesthetic is back on trend.

Often characterised by classic numbers such as blazers, pleated skirts, shirts, tailored trousers, cardigans, sweaters, vests, loafers and several other smart-casual pieces, this look is elegant yet easy-going.

These are sometimes reimagined with contemporary cuts such as looser fits or longer or shorter lengths, and usually paired with heritage patterns like plaids, Prince of Wales checks and houndstooth for a fresh twist on tradition.

The best thing about this style is how it mixes old-world charm with today’s trends, giving it a timeless yet up-to-date feel.

For instance, check out Sandro’s Spring/Summer 2026 design featuring a black and white ensemble that is polished and preppy, with a touch of luxe via gold button detailing and a plush suede bag.

The centrepiece is a brown glen plaid, short flare skirt and jacket ensemble.

This is accented by a black top with buttons bearing symbols of playing cards worn underneath, grounding the look alongside a tan suede bag and shiny black patent leather loafers.

Portuguese brand, Sacoor Brothers, known for its sharp, tailored style, offers a navy pants and shacket (shirt jacket) combo this season.

Timeless and tres chic, the shacket makes for a versatile wardrobe piece as it can be worn on its own for a sleek, coordinated look, or go a little casual by layering with a t-shirt underneath.

Another preppy chic moment for men comes from Ralph Lauren Purple Label’s Spring 2026 collection.

The look includes white tailored trousers and a matching T-shirt, topped with a knit beige button-front short-sleeve top for a contrast of texture.

A tan leather portfolio and matching timepiece give the ensemble a refined, coordinated finish.

Whimsical and spirited is Thom Browne’s take on the trend, where a three-quarter jacket and pleated skirt set is worn with a grey shirt with white collar and white cuffs plus a striped college necktie.

The jacket and skirt, both in yellow, have what appears to be an embroidery of tennis rackets, while the pleated skirt reveals what looks like a striped necktie print underneath.

With each step, a glimpse of the hidden stripe flashes from beneath the pleats.

What’s more, the ensemble is finished off with mismatched heels and bright red knee-high socks. So Elle Woods of Legally Blonde!

Issey Miyake redefines preppy chic with asymmetrical and deconstructed designs.

The look combines tailored trousers with a striped off-centre-collared shirt, layered over a uniquely modified sweater with a tie-on accent.

Olive green tassel loafers lend the look a mix of classic and unexpected attitude, putting a sole-ful twist on tradition.
