Stripes usually mean business (think of the ubiquitous pinstriped suit or shirt), but checks have a somewhat cool, casual and even edgy appeal.
What’s more, the square motif comes in a number of variations which makes it unique and versatile such as gingham, windowpane, chequerboard, houndstooth and Prince of Wales check just to name a few.
These are timeless design elements that can be mixed with other prints for a style that’s bold and creative, or feel free to sport squares head-to-toe if you are sure you can rock the look.
What’s important to note is that when selecting your preferred square design, keep in mind that they can give the illusion of a large physique.
Big checks tend to make you appear more substantial in size. For a slimmer silhouette, consider going for small or medium motifs.

Kate Spade does houndstooth all-over for one of its latest creations comprising a suit, bag and shoes, all covered in the classic print in black and white.
The American brand also offers a similar version in pink, but with a houndstooth check that is so subtle you need to look closely to spot the pattern.
Equally faint is the check design at Bottega Veneta’s menswear where a three-piece ensemble comprising a top, trousers and coat come in a fabric adorned with miniature checks.
Another motif in the check family is the tartan. It is favoured by many designers and brands for its rich heritage (it is believed that tartan weaving originated in the Highlands of Scotland in the 1600s) as well as its cool factor and well, checkered past.
In reference to the latter, punks, including members of the controversial Sex Pistols punk rock band of the 1970s, apparently wore tartan to bring attention to their anti-establishment stance, sometimes resulting in clashes with law enforcement.
Provocative or not, the traditional overlapping square grid pattern is very much in style as seen at Celine.
One of the French brand’s hottest summer looks includes a short, pleated tartan skirt paired with a black top and a striped track jacket.

At Chloe, its leather-lined coat is boxed out in plaid, and it is worn with a short dress and thigh-high boots, highlighting the progression of this onetime preppy print. Remember the iconic, campus chic, plaid sets worn by Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash’s characters in the 1990s flick Clueless?
For something classic, turn to Spanish label Loewe’s latest men’s collection which features a black and brown check overcoat.
And on the local front, designer Salikin Sidek offers a classic baju kurung in exquisite songket fabric featuring one of the most iconic check patterns: the gingham.
