Poster: All Women's Action Society
This year marks a milestone for the All Women’s Action Society (Awam) as it celebrates 40 years of championing gender equality, supporting survivors of gender-based violence and driving social change.
Awam is inviting Malaysians to step into an inspiring world of art and activism with its “Awam’s 40-Year Journey: A Canvas of Change”, a charity art exhibition that runs from Oct 19 to Nov 2 at Project Room, Ur-Mu@Toffee in Kuala Lumpur.
Open daily from 11am to 7pm (except Mondays and public holidays), the exhibition showcases striking portraits by artist Hakim Abdullah, also known as Pencil Ninja.
Each piece honours women whose strength, resilience and diversity have helped shape a more equal Malaysia. Admission to the exhibition is free but donations to the cause are welcome.
Complementing the exhibition is a portrait book that celebrates these trailblazing women. Every purchase of the book supports Awam’s counselling and legal information services, and outreach programmes for survivors of gender-based violence.
But Awam isn’t just looking back; it’s inviting the public to help write the next chapter. Through the #HerLegacyLivesOn campaign, everyone is encouraged to join a nationwide creative challenge on Instagram.
Choose a woman from Awam’s portrait book who inspires you, then create something in her honour – a painting, poem, song, dance or short video. Post your creation on Instagram with the hashtags #HerLegacyLivesOn #AWAM40 #CanvasOfChange and tag @awammalaysia (Instagram) by Sept 30 11:59pm.
Selected entries will be featured on Awam’s platforms, with a chance to win a copy of the portrait book – a meaningful keepsake of the women who spark change.
