Dog collars come in cute colours and patterns, sure, and may seem to restrict your pet’s movement far less than a harness would. But in fact, experts say, a collar’s not ideal.
Harnesses distribute the pressure from tugging or pulling the leash across a larger surface, explains veterinarian Silke Meerman. If your dog pulls, she advises, best get a harness.
The canine anatomical structure should be taken into consideration when picking out the right one for your pet – the shoulder blades and shoulder joints should be left free.
A so-called Norwegian harness, which features a large band across the chest, should not be used, according to Meerman.
The harness should also fit the dog well – there should be enough room to breathe, but not so much that the dog can slip out or the strap tightens across the throat when the dog pulls.
The material used in the harness should be light, not heavy, well-padded and equipped with reflectors, advises Meerman. – dpa
