Sustainability at the heart of IJM Land’s operations

In 2026, sustainability and ESG considerations will continue to shape IJM Land Bhd’s growth trajectory, as it strengthens climate action, promotes inclusion and enhances supply chain transparency.

“Sustainability is not a separate agenda; it is the cornerstone of our strategy for creating enduring value. We see sustainability not just as compliance, but as a strategic pathway to business growth and the achievement of our broader business goals,” said IJM Land Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Tony Ling Thou Lung.

The company’s 2026 ESG strategy is anchored on three main pillars, namely environmental resilience, the deepening of social impact and transparent governance.

“We believe the future of property development lies in seamlessly integrating environmental and social value at every stage of the lifecycle—from master planning to post-occupancy management.

“At IJM Land, we see our role as a responsible property developer in shaping the future by setting higher standards for how communities are conceived and managed,” he said.

Supply chain engagement

Beyond internal compliance, IJM Land also aims to bring its supply chain partners on board, extending its ESG commitments across the end-to-end operations.

“Collaboration and engagement across the supply chain are central to achieving IJM Land’s sustainability goals in 2026.

“As a property developer, a significant portion of our environmental and social impact sits beyond our direct operations, making it essential that ESG considerations are embedded throughout the value chain,” Ling said.

The company seeks to support its suppliers through guidance on emissions tracking, supplier engagement programmes and Scope 3 emissions management to help build collective capability and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices across its projects.

“By actively engaging our supply chain partners, industry peers and communities, we extend the reach of our ESG efforts and foster shared value that benefits both society and business,” he added.

This approach to sustainability, Ling said, allows the suppliers to adapt alongside IJM Land as ESG and sustainability expectations continue to evolve.

Reaffirm ESG commitment

The integration of ESG goals into the company’s operations is essential as it responds to the current escalating climate crisis.

“With climate change accelerating at an unprecedented rate, extreme weather events are posing increasing challenges to infrastructure and the community.

“For IJM Land, reaffirming our ESG commitment at this stage of growth is not just a responsibility—it is a strategic necessity,” Ling said.

He said that the company has a responsibility to build climate-resilient and sustainable communities while proactively managing long-term environmental and social risks.

“By doing so, we not only safeguard our assets and the communities we serve, but also strengthen our resilience as a growing organisation and demonstrate leadership in shaping Malaysia’s sustainable urban landscape.”

Net zero goals

In light of the climate crisis, national climate regulations are also evolving, with the introduction of the Climate Change Bill and a carbon tax set for 2026.

As a result, IJM Land is conducting internal impact assessments to evaluate how carbon pricing in the energy and steel sectors will influence its construction costs and supply chain.

“By embedding carbon-conscious practices today, we are not only ensuring compliance but also future-proofing our assets and ensuring that IJM Land remains resilient in an increasingly carbon-constrained economy,” he said.

IJM Land has also formalised a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

To achieve this goal, the company continues to align its projects with recognised green building standards to reinforce its commitment to responsible development and ensure every project contributes to a more resilient and low-carbon future over the long term.

Additionally, the company has installed solar panels across its sales galleries where practicable to further support its transition towards cleaner energy use.

“These efforts, together with promoting more sustainable practices throughout our supply chain, support measurable progress toward a lower-carbon operating model.

“By advancing climate action, fostering social inclusivity and advocating supply chain transparency, we ensure our properties are not only energy-efficient but also climate-resilient,” he said.
