Look who's back .. 'Duyung Legenda Aurora' reawakens a beloved Malaysian classic after 17 years

Malaysia’s most cherished fantasy film makes its long-awaited return to cinemas. And yes, Maya Karin is reprising her role in the original movie, and this time with Anna Jobling, Malaysia's current hot leading lady, hand-in-hand.

Seventeen years after leaving an unforgettable mark on audiences, Duyung (2008) is revived with an exciting new continuation, Duyung Legenda Aurora.

The film reintroduces this iconic universe with a contemporary storyline, spontaneous humour, and rejuvenated visual artistry designed to captivate a new generation of moviegoers.

Produced by KRU Studios and 8 Bit Studio, with Primeworks Studios serving as the official marketing partner, this fantasy comedy blends signature wit, magical elements, and heartfelt storytelling for viewers of all ages.

Directed by Dato’ Prof. Ts. Dr. A. Razak Mohaideen, Duyung Legenda Aurora reunites audiences with original cast members Maya Karin, Saiful Apek, and Yasmin Hani, while welcoming Anna Jobling, Ayie Floor88, and Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim, each bringing fresh energy and depth to the fantastical world.

In Duyung Legenda Aurora, Puteri Duyung (Maya Karin) returns to the human world seeking the help of Jimmy (Saiful Apek) and Aspalela (Yasmin Hani) after her daughter, Aurora (Anna Jobling), is abducted by a syndicate of illegal fish poachers using prohibited trawl nets.

Assisted by Hamlau (Saiful Zero), Dashmond (Ayie Floor88), and their new friend Ajaq (Aniq Aqil), a quest filled with chaos and wonder begins.

However, the challenge grows tougher as Aurora and Hamlau can only remain on land for no more than six hours. Set against a vibrant world of sea and land, this journey puts not only their lives at stake, but also love and the future of two worlds.

“Duyung Legenda Aurora promises a wholesome family experience filled with laughter, thrilling action sequences, and a story that celebrates love, courage, and the legacy of two worlds that depend on one another. It is poised to be the must-watch title of the year-end season,” shared Director Dato’ Prof. Ts. Dr. A. Razak Mohaideen.

The original Duyung (2008) stunned the Malaysian film industry with an impressive box office collection of RM4.7 million from 61 cinemas nationwide, a hefty number at that time.

Its success continued with a win for the Box Office Award at the 21st Malaysia Film Festival, solidifying its status as an iconic film. Even more remarkably, Duyung made history by filming approximately 40% of its scenes underwater at the legendary Sipadan Island. To this day, the character of Puteri Si Duyung remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated figures in Malaysian pop culture.

Nostalgia meets a brand-new adventure. Duyung remains a beloved title deeply rooted in the memories of the 2000s generation, close to the hearts of families, and continues to leave a strong legacy through the hit song ‘Aspalela’, which remains a staple of Malaysian pop culture today.

This new chapter is further enriched with two original soundtracks (OST) for Duyung Legenda Aurora: "Lagu Happy" performed by Datuk Seri Vida, bringing a vibrant and cheerful atmosphere, and "Hanya Kamu" sung by Shahir and Adira, adding a romantic and emotional layer to the story’s journey.

Don’t miss the chance to catch Duyung Legenda Aurora, set to make waves in cinemas nationwide starting 25 December 2025. Use #DuyungLegendaAurora and #FilemHiburanHujungTahun to keep the social media buzz going.
