Myanmar stuns Malaysia in World Cup takraw semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: The national regu squad suffered a shock 15-9, 15-10 defeat to Myanmar in the semi-finals of the World Cup at the Titiwangsa Stadium on Tuesday (May 19).

Despite having the backing of thousands of fans, national trio Farhan Adam, Azlan Alias and Syahir Rosdi appeared out of sorts at the venue.

Malaysia attempted a fightback in the second set but Myanmar's Thant Zin Tun, Aung Aung and Ye Hte held their nerve to close out the match in straight sets.

Myanmar will take on Thailand in the final on Wednesday night. The Thais defeated South Korea 11-15, 15-11, 15-7 in their semi-final match.

The national squad thus failed to defend the inter-regu title they won during the 2024 World Cup, which was also held in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia's Afifuddin Razali, Shahalril Aiman Halim, Amirul Zazwan Amir and Aidil Aiman Azwawi however, qualified for the quadrant final after edging Vietnam 15-10, 12-15, 17-14 in the semi-finals.

Malaysia will face India, who downed Myanmar 15-9, 15-17, 15-9 in the decider on Wednesday night.
