KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated the national men's sepak takraw squad on winning the team regu gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday (Sept 25).
He described their success in ending the country's 36-year wait to reclaim the gold medal, which was also Malaysia's fourth gold at Asiad 2026, as a highly meaningful victory and a source of pride for all Malaysians.
"Syabas (Well done) Malaysia. Continue to bring glory to Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also congratulated the national men's sepak takraw squad.
In a Facebook post, he said the success ended Malaysia's 36-year wait to reclaim the gold medal in the event.
"Alhamdulillah, after a 36-year wait, the gold medal finally belongs to Malaysia once again. My congratulations to the national men's sepak takraw squad for their proud achievement in the team regu event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games today.
"Another historic moment has been created. Well done, national heroes! Continue to make Malaysia proud on the world stage," he said in the post.
Earlier, the national sepak takraw squad clinched the men’s team regu gold medal after defeating Thailand 2-0 in the final at the Paloma Mizuho Arena.
Malaysia last won gold in the event when they defeated the same opponents at the 1990 edition in Beijing. - Bernama
