GEORGE TOWN: Techom Metal Sdn Bhd, a technology-driven environmental and battery recycling company, has successfully launched its Rechargeable Battery Circularity Programme and Kitar Hub.
The event brought together industry leaders, technology partners, recyclers, government agencies and sustainability stakeholders to advance responsible battery recycling and circular economy practices in Malaysia.
The programme was officiated by Penang state housing and environment committee chairman cum Penang Green Council (PGC) chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, who commended the collaborative effort between industry players and sustainability partners in building a more structured and responsible rechargeable battery recycling ecosystem.
As the usage of lithium batteries and electronic devices continues to increase rapidly, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries has become a growing environmental and safety concern due to risks such as fire hazards, toxic leakage and pollution.
To address these challenges, Techom has initiated this programme to strengthen Malaysia’s rechargeable battery circularity ecosystem. The initiative focuses on industry collaboration, responsible recycling practices, public awareness and technology-driven collection solutions.

A key highlight of the programme was the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between strategic industry partners committed to supporting responsible battery collection, recovery, recycling and circular economy development.
The MoU signing partners include:
> Techom Metal Sdn Bhd;
> Linergy Power Sdn Bhd;
> EVE Energy Co Ltd;
> Tenpower Malaysia Sdn Bhd;
> Agmo Studio Sdn Bhd;
> Cellcycle Ltd;
> The Solar House Sdn Bhd;
> Riiicycle Tech Sdn Bhd.

The MoU signing ceremony was witnessed by Sundarajoo, together with representatives from PGC, reflecting the strong collaboration between the government, industry players, recyclers and sustainability stakeholders in advancing Malaysia’s rechargeable battery circularity agenda.
Through this collaboration, the partners aim to establish a more sustainable and structured ecosystem to ensure rechargeable batteries are responsibly collected, safely managed, properly recycled and kept within a circularity loop where valuable materials can be recovered and reintroduced back into the supply chain.
Riiicycle Tech Sdn Bhd founder Chew Chin Huat shared, “About 800 tonnes of recyclable materials, including batteries, e-waste and used cooking oil, have been collected since early 2024.”
The initiative also focuses on strengthening public participation through collection campaigns, educational programmes, community engagement and smart recycling infrastructure to encourage more responsible recycling behaviour among businesses and the public.
In conjunction with the programme, invited guests and members of the media also witnessed the launch of Kitar Hub located near the Pacific Entrance. The hub features AI Smart Bin technology and smart recycling solutions that demonstrate how innovation can support smarter, more efficient and sustainable recycling practices.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by both public and private sectors towards building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Malaysia through innovation, environmental responsibility and circular economy collaboration.
Techom extends its appreciation to PGC, Riiicycle Tech, strategic industry partners, participating organisations and all stakeholders who made this initiative possible, sharing the sentiment, “Together, we close the loop for a more sustainable future. Penang Leads! To Be The Best and Lead The Rest!”

Techom operates under Malaysia’s licensed environmental and scheduled waste management framework.
Moving forward, Techom aims to further strengthen Malaysia’s battery circularity ecosystem through Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-driven solutions, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives, smart collection infrastructure, traceability systems and regional industry collaboration.
