SHAH ALAM: Selangor's Shannon Tan, only 15, came agonisingly close to becoming the second swimmer after Eliza Tan to break a long standing national record at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor.

The youngest swimmer in the women's 200m butterfly final, however, did not make it but managed to smash the Sukma record twice in a day at Akuatik Selangor on Friday (Aus 21).

Shannon put up a blistering 2:15.13s to claim her third gold of the Games, coming close to breaking Khoo Cai Lin's national record of 2:14.30s set in 2013.

Khor Yue Lynn took the silver for Selangor (2:18.19s) while Lee Yen Ern won the bronze for Penang (2:24.68s).

Shannon had earlier qualified fastest for the final in 2:15.77s, erasing the previous Sukma record of 2:17.79s held by Hii Siew Siew of Sarawak since 2012.

Shannon had already won the 200m individual medley and 4x100 mixed medley events for Selangor earlier.
