SHAH ALAM: Selangor's Eliza Tan has become the first Malaysian female swimmer to go below 57 seconds in the 100m freestyle.

The 19-year-old smashed the national record for the second time on Thursday (Aug 20) in winning the women's 100m freestyle final at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) by clocking an impressive 56.78s.

She had posted 57.03s in her morning heat swim to become the first Malaysian athlete to break a national record at the Games, thus erasing the previous benchmark of 57.11s set by Perak's Nadia Lim in June.

Nadia settled for silver in 57.67s while Lynna Yeow claimed the bronze in 58.52s.

It is the second gold for Sukma debutant Eliza having won the 200m freestyle event on Wednesday.
