SEA Games: Synchronised swimmers poised to give Malaysia first gold

SINGAPORE: Synchronised swimmers Katrina Ann Hadi-Lee Yhing Huey are on course to deliver Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Singapore SEA Games on Wednesday.

The Malaysians are leading the pack after the duet technical routine on Tuesday.

The duo collected 75.343 points to lead the other eight pairs on the opening day of competition. Singapore’s Stephanie Chen Mei Qi-Lee Mei Shuang are a close second with 73.970 points. 

Malaysia can expect a golden splash if Katrina and Yhing Huey continue to dominate the proceedings in the free routine event on the second day of the competition at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

A jubilant Katrina said she’s happy with their performance and will keep her fingers crossed for a better performance in the free routine event.

“We did well. I can say we performed to the max and we are quite happy with our performance and score,” said Katrina.

“Today’s result is just 50%, we have another 50% to fight for tomorrow (today). We still need to get a higher score to win ... we are only 1.373 points ahead of Singapore.

“But I think we have a good chance to win the gold.”

Synchronised swimming was last contested at the 2011 Indonesia Games. Three golds – team free routine, team free combination and duet free routine – are up for grabs here.
