PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's new mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin made heads turn after stunning world No. 1 and top seeds Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping of China to reach the second round of the Singapore Open.

The duo, playing in only their second international tournament together, needed just 43 minutes to upset the Chinese pair 23-21, 21-16 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday (May 26).

Jimmy-Su Yin will next face Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan-Hu Ling-fang for a place in the quarter-finals.

Jimmy was delighted with the response after their first round exit at the Malaysian Masters in Bukit Jalil last week.

"I’m so happy that we came back stronger here," said Jimmy.

"It was all about being patient today and I’m glad we managed to beat the world No. 1 pair."

Jimmy recently parted ways with Lai Pei Jing to join the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) setup, while Su Yin had been without a partner after Hoo Pang Ron left the national body.

The move has already paid off as Jimmy-Su Yin pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament in their fledgling partnership.
