Jimmy-Su Yin beat the odds to reach Japan Open second round


PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin fought back to upset world No. 14 Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara and reach the second round of the Japan Open on Wednesday (July 15).

Jimmy-Su Yin made a strong start but lost their way in the second game before regaining their focus to seal a 21-19, 11-21, 21-19 victory in 60 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

They will face either Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi-Nita Marwah or sixth seeds Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France.

Husband-and-wife pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie also advanced to the second round after beating the United States' Chen Zhi Yi-Francesca Corbett 21-13, 22-20.

A tougher test awaits Soon Huat-Shevon in the second round, where they will take on China's second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin.

In the women's singles, K. Letshanaa's campaign ended in the first round after she went down 16-21, 12-21 to South Korea's Kim Ga-eun.
