Malaysian Masters title defence in jeopardy for Wei Chong-Kai Wun

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may be without defending champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the Malaysian Masters from May 19-24 if Wei Chong fails to recover in time from his right knee injury.

His participation in the Singapore Open from May 26-31 also remains uncertain.

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said Wei Chong’s condition is being closely monitored and the pair could be withdrawn from both tournaments if the injury does not heal in time.

“We need to look at the progress of his (Wei Chong) injury this week and also next week. We have to see whether his knee condition is good enough for him to play in the Malaysian Masters or not.

“Even the Singapore Open is still a question mark. If he is still not fully fit for the Malaysian Masters, then we may also skip the Singapore Open,” said Rexy.

Wei Chong has been playing through pain for the past three months after suffering the injury in February.

However, Wei Chong continued to play through the pain as he did not want to let down the coaching team down as they had continued to back him, including during last week’s Thomas Cup campaign in Horsens, Denmark.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun won the Malaysian Masters title last year after beating fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the final.
