AS targeted fuel subsidy rationalisation reshapes the cost of driving in Malaysia, the daily urban commute is evolving from a routine expense into a budgetary strain.

Against this backdrop of worsening traffic gridlock, the case for smarter, shared mobility has never been more urgent.

Enter Grab’s latest feature – Group Ride – an invite-based carpooling solution that allows Malaysians to easily split fares, slash individual transport expenses and reduce their collective carbon footprint, one shared trip at a time.

Convenience in every ride

Carpooling may seem simple in theory, but the mountain of logistics behind every trip rarely is. Group Ride takes care of all of that – from trip coordination to fare splitting.

Friends or family scattered across town can skip making their way to a central meet-up point separately, or having to make multiple individual bookings just to head home after an outing.

Instead, everyone travels in a single car. The feature operates through two smart routing options:

Same Drop-off: Picks up passengers from multiple distinct locations and drives them to a shared destination.

Same Pickup: Collects the entire group from a single location and drops each person off at their respective destinations along the way.

Grab’s routing technology automatically optimises the sequence of stops for the most efficient path, ensuring nobody has to go out of their way.

Meanwhile, the invite-based mechanic ensures that passengers are always in trusted company, completely eliminating the need to ride with strangers.

Best of all, the group saves on travel costs collectively. The more people who share the ride, the more everyone saves, with discounts reaching up to 15%. Through it all, nobody has to think about the fare splitting.

Booking a Group Ride

Getting started with a Group Ride booking is straightforward and completely automated from start to finish.

To initiate the process, the host simply taps the “Car” tile from the Grab home page and selects Group Ride.

From there, the host sets the parameters of the journey by choosing the preferred pickup arrangement – either Same Pickup or Same Drop-off – and deciding how the fare will be handled.

The app offers the flexibility to split the cost equally, divide it proportionately based on each person's distance travelled, or have the host cover the entire trip themselves.

Once these rules are set, the app generates a shareable invite link to send directly to friends or family.

Upon clicking the link, members instantly enter a digital Waiting Room where they can see who has joined and track the vehicle’s progress in real time.

When the entire group is assembled and ready, the host simply taps “We’re ready to go” to confirm the booking.

At the end of the journey, nobody has to calculate bank transfers as Grab’s auto fare-splitting feature does the maths and charges each passenger automatically based on the host’s preset rules.

This ensures everyone arrives together with the logistics and fares completely sorted.

With rising fuel surcharges and worsening traffic conditions, the government has encouraged carpooling initiatives under its “Kongsi Perjalanan, Kongsi Tambang” narrative, where Grab’s Group Ride is designed for optimised travel.
