Rexy welcomes job to focus only on doubles

PETALING JAYA: Rexy Mainaky (pic) has no issues with the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to restructure the coaching set-up yet again.

Rexy, who was previously the coaching director, will now only oversee the doubles camp, giving Kenneth Jonassen the task of being the singles coaching director.

And Rexy likes the arrangement as it had reduced his responsibility.

“My true passion is in the doubles camp. So after discussing with the management, we agreed that Jonassen will focus on the singles camp and I will handle the doubles,” said Rexy.

“This way, both of us can give more time and detailed approaches for both departments, because we will have the ability to focus completely on them.

The restructuring was announced on Tuesday and was part of the association’s efforts to streamline the coaching department and improve efficiency, giving Jonassen’s expertise in singles and Rexy’s experience in doubles.

Rexy added that the singles department is in good hands with Jonassen, who has been the head coach since his arrival in January.

“You can see that Jonassen has the capabilities, as he was the head coach in Denmark, and has led them to two Olympic gold medals through Viktor Axelsen (men’s singles).

“This is why the decision is to allow Jonassen to fully focus on the singles department,” said Rexy.

The 57-year-old Indonesian added that the restructuring was a blast from the past, as it was the same role that he held when he rejoined BAM in 2021, working with Wong Choong Hann, who was the singles coaching director at the time.

“It’s just like in 2021, Choong Hann was the singles director, while I focused on doubles.

“And it’s the same thing now, it’s about allowing us to focus completely on each department,” added Rexy.
