Indonesian Herry arrives and is set to hit the ground running

PETALING JAYA: Indonesian Herry Iman Pierngardi (pic) will be busy as a bee on his first day as the men’s doubles coach at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) at Bukit Kiara today.

The 62-year-old, who arrived yesterday, would be briefed by national coaching director Rexy Mainaky at the centre.

The Indonesian will only get to meet some of the players, as a few others would only report for duty after the Chinese New Year break on Monday.

There is high expectations on Herry to make a difference for Malaysia in the doubles department.

He has been hired as a replacement for Tan Bin Shen, who left to coach in Hong Kong.

Herry’s immediate task will be the Asia Mixed Team event from Feb 11-16 in China but the main goal will be the All-England from March 11-16 in Birmingham.

All eyes will be on him to see how he can lift the standard of former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and others ranked below them.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will be one of the main focus as the top Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) pair just need a little jolt to be more consistent on the world stage.

It will be an excellent start for Herry if he can produce an All-England winning combo in just his first month with the national team.

Herry has worked with several world-renowned players such as Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido, as well as Kevin Sanjaya and Marcus Fernaldi and these players have won every major titles under his care.
