PETALING JAYA: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz did not hide his disappointment after the national players failed to deliver a title at the Malaysian Masters, which concluded on Sunday (May 24).
Malaysia’s best effort in the final came through independent men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, but they were beaten by Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard.
For Zafrul said a reset was needed if Malaysia were to return to winning ways.
“The support from the fans was truly extraordinary. The stadium was full, the cheers never stopped. That is our strength. That is why we have to be honest. The support is world class, but our performances this time did not reach that level," said Zafrul.
“At this stage, excuses are no longer enough. We need to reset and refocus.
"Go back to basics. Discipline, consistency and the mentality to win on the biggest stage,” said Zafrul in a statement posted on his social media.
Zafrul was also disappointed with several elite players who failed to deliver a title and hinted that BAM would implement changes in their training approach.
“Improvements will be made, including refining our training approach and sharpening our focus for upcoming tournaments.
“Everyone must take responsibility. The players, coaches and management. In elite sport, names alone are not enough. Performance must be consistent,” he added.
