PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik booked their spot in the Singapore Open second round after defeating French brothers Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov on Wednesday (May 27).
Defending champions Aaron-Wooi Yik delivered a commanding performance to win 21-17, 21-15 in 37 minutes against the French pair.
It was the world No. 2 Malaysians’ third win over the world No. 21 Popovs, following their wins at the China Open last year and the Denmark Open in 2023.
Aaron-Wooi Yik will face either England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy or Japan’s Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi in the second round.
Meanwhile, women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah endured a slight scare against Taiwan’s Hu Ling-fang-Jheng Yu-chieh, but pulled through to enter the second round.
Second seed Pearly-Thinaah came from behind to win 20-22, 21-16, 21-15 against the world No. 26 Taiwanese pair.
The Singapore Open is Pearly and Thinaah's first outing since the Asian Championships in China last month. Pearly had missed the Uber Cup and also the Malaysian Masters last week to recover from a back injury.
In the second round, Pearly-Thinaah will face either Thailand’s Benyapa Aimsaar-Nuntakarn Aimsaard or Canadian pair Jackie Dent-Crystal Lai.
