New star: Penang's shuttler Tan Kean Wei upstage defending champion to win the boys' singles Under-21 title.
PETALING JAYA: Another 'Wei' has stepped up from Penang to show that he could be a future badminton star.
After former great Lee Chong Wei (men's singles) and Goh Jin Wei (women's singles), both from the state, youngster Tan Kean Wei showed his potential when he captured the boys' singles title in the National Under-21 championships in Kuantan on Sunday (Jan 26).
The 18-year-old Kean Wei fought hard to beat last year's Under-18 champion Roslie Razeeq Danial under Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) 21-18, 13-21, 21-10 in Kuantan on Sunday (Jan 26).
In the girl's singles, Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) Lim Zhi Shin, who also hails from Penang, upstaged Selangor's Siti Nurshuhaini Azman 21-19, 17-21, 21-19 to win the title.
