Zii Jia progresses after Srikanth retires at Canadian Open

PETALING JAYA: Men' singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has advanced to the second round of the Canadian Open after India's K. Srikanth retired just nine minutes into their first-round match on Wednesday (July 1).

The match at the Markham Pan Am Centre had been evenly contested before Srikanth, who finished runner-up at last week's US Open, was forced to retire while trailing 10-11 in the opening game.

The outcome came as a welcome boost for Zii Jia after he suffered a second-round defeat to the former world No. 1 at the US Open just a week ago.

Zii Jia will next face either Canada's Joshua Nguyen or Taiwan's Liao Jhuo-fu for a place in the quarter-finals.
