KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia pulled off a rare feat by assuring the women's singles badminton gold medal and thus, ending a 14-year wait.
Soniia Cheah and Goh Jin Wei made it an all-Malaysia affair in the women's singles by winning their respective semi-final matches at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.
Soniia was on fire when she raised her game to beat Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 22-20, 21-13 in a 37-minute match.
Former world junior champion Jin Wei did not disappoint when she dug deep into reserve to beat third seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 21-9, 10-21, 21-18.
Malaysia last won the women's singles title through Wong Mew Choo at the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games.
