Teachers, consider asking for an AI-use note

I HAVE been following the recent discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) in education in The Star; I refer specifically to the letters “Maybe AI is not the problem” (Sept 14; online at bit.ly/ 4rrQas6) and the response urging students to give AI the “Columbo treatment” (Sept 16; online at bit.ly/4iHGbN8).

There is one practical step universities could add: require a short AI-use note with major assignments. Not a confession. Not a detector score. Just a few lines saying what tool was used, for what purpose and what the student changed afterwards.
