‘Anti-Smoking Angel’ in gas mask sparks online debate

A WOMAN in China showed her disdain for second-hand smoke by wearing a full-face gas mask on board a train, leaving other passengers stunned, China Press reported.

She was seen in a video putting on a raincoat, tying her hair and then placing a gas mask covering her whole face. The mask had dual filter cartridges.

Calling herself the Anti-Smoking Angel online, Internet users questioned if she had worn the outfit to prevent second-hand smoke or to attract online attention.

Netizens pointed out that the gas masks offered little advantage against smoke, tar and nicotine over a standard N95 mask.

Many ridiculed the raincoat she was wearing, saying that it offered no filtration benefits against smoke.

“She is riding the train as if she was preparing for nuclear fallout. It is way over the top,” one netizen wrote.

Many criticised her behaviour, dismissing it as merely a stunt.

Smoking is allowed in designated areas on trains in China.

> Cross-border e-commerce sites offering ultra-low prices are undercutting Malaysian businesses, so retailers are urging the government to intervene, the daily also reported.

Malaysia Retail Chain Association president Datuk Liew Bin pointed out that a nail clipper was being sold on a local online shopping platform for RM13 but the same item could be bought on a Chinese platform for just RM2.

He said the latter platform benefitted from having direct access to China’s manufacturing base, giving it significant pricing and logistical advantages.

The government should step in to regulate cross-border e-commerce to create a fairer environment for local retailers, he added.
