Man suffers burns in Semporna hotel restaurant fire


SEMPORNA: A man suffered burns to his arm after a restaurant at a hotel here was destroyed in a fire here on Saturday (Aug 22).

Semporna Fire and Rescue Station chief Zainal Sinsian said the department received an emergency call before firefighters arrived at the scene at 12.52pm.

He said the blaze involved a semi-permanent restaurant measuring about 30ft by 40ft, which was completely destroyed.

“The heat from the fire also affected about 20% of the nearby Wave View Hotel building,” he said in a statement.

Zainal said firefighters battled the blaze from both land and sea.

The land operation involved three hose lines and six jets covering a distance of about 300ft, with water supplied by fire engines and hydrants.

The Semporna Water Fire and Rescue unit also fought the blaze from the sea using an open water source.

“According to hotel workers, a man suffered burns to his arm and was taken by hotel staff to Semporna Hospital for treatment before firefighters arrived,” he said.

The fire was brought under control at 1.47pm and the operation ended at 4.11pm after firefighters confirmed that the area was safe.

The cause of the fire and estimated losses are still under investigation.
